Watch Me Design a 3-Letter Modern Serif Monogram

Branding + Design

If you follow me on Instagram, I’ll *sometimes* share sneak peeks of a logo or monogram I’m creating and sketching on my iPad. Within that 24-hour Instagram story period, I get told, A LOT, how mesmerizing it is and that I need to share it more.

Here’s the thing, my creative ‘sketching’ time is typically in the evening while cozying up on the couch, so to record the entire process is just impossible (I need both of my hands ;). But, the other day I was doing it at my desk and decided to just capture it for ya ;)

A Modern Serif Monogram

Typically when creating a monogram I have to do a deep dive into their homework to make sure I design one within their brand style (ie: serif, modern, traditional, minimal, playful, geometric, etc). And then, based on the number of letters, I have to figure out how exactly I can make them work within that specific style.

A 3-letter monogram is often much harder to work with, especially when the letters are different shapes.

For example, the rounded ‘S’ vs. the angled ‘Y’ and ‘M’. How can I make 3 letters feel balanced, easy-to-read, modern yet high-end? It can be a very long process (some will take me 4 hours), and it’s simply a ton of trial and error until it just feels right. With that being said, I do love how this one turned out, and glad I captured it it!

P.S. This is from a semi-custom brand transformation!
